Our birth experience likely would’ve gone very differently if it hadn’t been for Emily. My water broke late at night a few days before my due date, and I wasn’t feeling any contractions at the time. As first time parents, we were going into everything with no idea what to expect. Naturally, my husband’s initial inclination with my water breaking was to call the hospital, but I recommended we contact Emily first (we have a doula, let’s use her!). She immediately got back to us and we were able to talk on the phone during which she calmly inquired about our current situation - how I was feeling, the state of the fluid we were seeing, and what questions we had.
From there she wisely advised us to wait it out and rest until a specific time the following day. If we had called the hospital like my husband wanted to, we would’ve been told to come in immediately and likely my birth would’ve taken much longer with the potential for medical interventions to get things moving. Being able to communicate with Emily from the very beginning put both me and my husband at ease. We felt empowered and reassured in the decisions we were making because of how Emily walked us through every step. Not only did we feel like we could ask her anything at any time, but she also regularly checked in with us throughout the day following my water breaking but also during my pregnancy and even into postpartum.
Having her in the room during my labor, birth, and a few hours after our son’s arrival made us feel so much more comfortable than we would’ve been had we been on our own. Her recommendations and knowledge about the medical procedures allowed us to ask for things we wouldn’t have otherwise been offered. She also knew exactly the type of questions to ask or things to say during our labor and delivery based on the prenatal meetings we had with her and the desires we communicated to her from the moment she was hired.
Additionally, Emily made my husband and I feel like close friends from day one. We also share a faith background and to have her spiritual support in preparing for such a big moment in our lives was so incredibly meaningful. We were and still are so thankful for all of her prayers throughout our journey together.
Whether you are first time parents or you’ve done this a few times before, you would benefit from having Emily in your corner. She’s an incredibly strong advocate and a nurturing supporter to have as part of your birth team.
